Case Study: Homestead-Miami Speedway

Racing Toward Inclusion: Making NASCAR Accessible for Every Fan

When NASCAR selected Homestead-Miami Speedway to host its championship, the spotlight wasn’t only on the race, it was on the fan experience. With 43,000 seats across an 18,000 square foot facility, the Speedway made a forward-thinking commitment: ensuring that every guest could access, enjoy, and participate fully.

In partnership with The WOW Center, Access Built led an inclusive accessibility review that went beyond checklists and compliance. Our team conducted walkthroughs with individuals of all abilities to uncover opportunities for improvement that academic evaluations often miss.

The Opportunity

Sports and entertainment venues are some of the most dynamic spaces for accessibility. Mobility, signage, seating, and sensory design all play a role in shaping how inclusive and enjoyable the experience is.

Homestead-Miami Speedway recognized that the upcoming NASCAR Championship was the perfect opportunity to lead by example, embracing inclusion not as a requirement but as a way to deliver a best-in-class experience for every fan.

Our Approach

Access Built applied our Friction Point™ Method, a human-centered process that identifies and solves barriers through lived experience:

  • Partnered with The WOW Center to involve individuals of different abilities directly in the walkthrough.

  • Evaluated entrances, seating, restrooms, and circulation routes through the lens of real guests.

  • Identified opportunities where small improvements could deliver major gains in comfort, safety, and dignity.

  • Delivered a clear roadmap balancing immediate actions with long-term enhancements to strengthen the overall guest experience.

The Results

By taking a proactive approach, Homestead-Miami Speedway is now positioned to:

  • Elevate the Fan Experience: Create a welcoming environment for tens of thousands of visitors.

  • Lead in Inclusion: Show leadership by moving beyond compliance and prioritizing human-centered design.

  • Set a Championship Standard: Serve as a model venue for inclusive sports and entertainment experiences nationwide.

Human-Centered Perspective

“Accessibility isn’t just about ramps and regulations. By walking venues with individuals of all abilities, we uncover the small but critical details that make the difference between someone attending a race, or staying home. That’s what human-centered design is all about.”
